Can You Have Young Children and Handmade Rugs? Absolutely.

Many parents assume handmade rugs and young children don't mix. After years spent around handmade rugs—and now raising two young children—I see things a little differently.

When people discover that I specialize in handmade rugs, one of the questions I hear surprisingly often is:

"But aren't you worried about children ruining them?"

It's an understandable question.

Children spill drinks.

They play on the floor.

They drop toys.

They sometimes forget that crayons don't belong everywhere.

Many people assume that owning a handmade rug means living in constant fear of something happening to it.

My experience has been very different.

Handmade Rugs Were Made to Be Lived On

For centuries, handmade rugs weren't created simply to decorate formal living rooms.

They were woven for everyday life.

Families gathered on them.

Children learned to crawl on them.

Meals were shared on them.

They were walked on every day and often remained part of the household for generations.

A handmade rug isn't fragile simply because it's valuable.

A well-made wool rug is surprisingly resilient.

Raising My Own Children Changed My Perspective

Having children of my own has made me appreciate handmade rugs even more.

I've watched my son and daughter crawl across them, play with toys on them, and spend countless hours sitting on them.

Rather than worrying every minute about protecting the rug, I've been reminded that these rugs were originally made to be part of family life—not admired only from a distance.

Some of my favourite photographs are simply my children enjoying the rugs.

Those moments are worth far more than keeping a room looking untouched.

Choosing the Right Rug Matters

That doesn't mean every handmade rug is ideal for every family.

Some materials require more care than others.

For example, silk rugs are generally more delicate than wool and may not be the best choice for busy family rooms.

Wool, on the other hand, is naturally resilient, hides everyday wear remarkably well, and has been trusted for generations in homes around the world.

Choosing the right material—and the right construction—can make a significant difference in how practical a rug will be for your lifestyle.

Don't Expect Perfection

No floor covering stays perfect forever.

Machine-made rugs wear.

Hardwood floors scratch.

Tiles chip.

Furniture gets marked.

A handmade rug will naturally develop signs of use over time.

Many collectors even appreciate this gentle ageing because it reflects a rug that has been enjoyed rather than hidden away.

Good care, regular vacuuming, prompt attention to spills, and professional cleaning when needed will help preserve a rug for many years.

A Rug Is Part of the Home

When I see my children playing on a handmade rug, I don't see something being ruined.

I see a rug doing exactly what it was made to do.

For generations, handmade rugs have been part of everyday family life.

Today, they're still capable of doing exactly that.

The memories created on them often become just as valuable as the rugs themselves.
